Overclocking any PC component can drastically increase the performance of your computer. Although the processor is the most commonly overclocked component, you can also overclock a graphics card, or memory. Overclocking any component can be difficult and very risky, but there are three ways of doing this so you can choose the best way to suit your needs. Hardware is the most difficult and riskiest but it can provide the best results. Using your BIOS is slightly easier but not all motherboards support it, and software is the easiest but also doesn’t deliver as high results. Using free software such as Riva Tuner can provide instant results however, greatly increasing the performance of your graphics card.

ATI launched the HD 4890 video chip earlier this year in April and today it is one of the bestselling video cards in the world with cards available at the same price point as the GeForce GTX 275 or lower and offering similar performance but more features (DirectX 10.1). The HD 4890 is available online for as low as $213, making it one of the better deals in terms of price/performance. ASUS sells a lot of video cards based on both NVIDIA and ATI chips and this review is on the ASUS EAH4890/HTDI/1GD5/A card.

In this guide I will show you how to overclock you graphics card using RivaTuner:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163

Riva Tuner is tested for most graphics cards and the sliders only go as far as your card is capable.(the max value varies for each graphics card.) Riva Tuner is compatible with most ATI and Nvidia graphics cards including the 9600 GT.

If your card Is crashing, lowr the values, test and apply. then work your way up slowly by 5s or 10s

For rivatuner 2.09:
It’s the same, besides that when you press system settings, you will have to check enable driver level overclocking and press detect now, then near the top switch from standard 2D to performance 3D then you can set values and then its the same

Please note that overclocking your graphics card causes more heat buildup, so make sure that you have sufficient cooling.
